We wanted to use the local art gallery in Herne bay to showcase the fantastic learning that has taken place during our 2012 Arts week. We also wanted to broaden our theme so that it encompasses cultural understanding as well as a sporting theme.
Each of the 3 year groups took an aspect of the olympics. Foundation Stage and Nursery took the colours of the 5 rings and created hoops with coloured collage. Year 1 concentrated on the different sports and events. Year 2 looked at the wealth of cultural learning. They drew pictures of famous buildings around the world, created flags of the participating countries (and this hangs as a beautiful border around the art gallery), captured the great British tradition of tea drinking by decorating large teacups, and created collages inside the shapes of various countries around the world.
The children have gained an insight into lives of children around the world. They are valuing the work of others and reflecting on similarities and differences. They also have an increased knowledge of the events and countries involved in the Olympics.
It has raised an awareness of 2012 and the Olympic values. Team cohesion has increased, adults and children working together to create a fabulous diplay. Community involvement has been high as we are taking our work out into the community and producing something for us all to enjoy.
